Together with one of the world's largest architectural firms Tengbom, and OBOS, one of Scandinavia's largest house construction companies, Bruynzeel has produced an innovative movable furniture wall. All companies contributed with their expertise in this project. Tengbom contributed with the design and Bruynzeel developed and produced the flexible furniture wall. OBOS made a flat available where the product was being tested during a couple of months. 

Compact living

With the tiny housing or compact living movement and the growing population, there is a demand for flexible room solutions and multifunctional furniture to make optimal use of the scarce space, as well as leaving a small carbon footprint. From a sustainability perspective the effects of building smaller houses is very positive. For example, a smaller house requires less building materials, less heating and has a smaller footprint.

 

The movable furniture wall

The flexible furniture wall is a trackless mobile solution which is operated via a remote control and a user interface. It’s a multifunctional piece of furniture consisting of a bed, a dining area or a work area. With just a click, you can change the layout of the flat or house. The concept contributes to our daily activities by offering the space we need at a certain time of day. At night it provides a bedroom, while the same space can be used as living room or work area during the day. 

 

Once I understood how the furniture wall worked, it felt like a very simple procedure. I believe that this becomes a natural part of one's everyday life.

Space saving product

During the spring of 2021, there was a test trial version of the demo product in one of OBOS' flat in Trollhättan, Sweden, where the participants got to try the flexible furniture wall overnight. In total, 91% of the test persons perceived the flat as more spacious thanks to the flexible furniture wall.

I'd like advice from an expert

 

We view the flat within closed and fixed walls as an outdated concept and we need to create new and smarter solutions. I strongly believe that this kind of solution can create a new product category for the future, although only time will tell.
